Nalknad Palace Coorg Kakkabe is a hamlet of Coorg famous for its timeless splendours, including the Igguthappa Temple, Thadiyandamol Peak and Nalnad Palace. King of Kodava, Dodda Veerarajendra, built this palace after escaping Tipu Sultan’s attack and invading Coorg.

Also called Naalnaad Aremane, Nalaknad Palace was built by Kodava king Dodda Veerarajendra in 1792 CE after escaping from Tippu Sultan’s attack during his invasion of Coorg. This two-storey building served as a hunting lodge for kings of Kodava. On the front of the palace, there is a beautiful mantapa, built in 1796 for the wedding ceremony of Dodda Veerarajendra with Mahadevammaji. This palace would be the last refuge of the last king of Kodagu, Chikka Veerarajendra, before his dismissal by the British.

With its intricate wood carvings, sloping tapered roof, crested dome and pillared façade, the palace is an architectural marvel. The courtyard of the palace is decorated with statues of four bulls. The entire palace is decorated with ancient paintings that constitute a major tourist attraction.

The Nalaknad Palace is a protected monument under the direction of the Archeology and Museums Directorate of Karnataka. It has been renovated by INTACH. It has been proposed to turn the Nalknad Palace into a tourist attraction, transforming it into a museum displaying handicrafts and weapons from the Kodagu region.
