Kemmanagundi is a beautiful and picturesque mountain resort located at 1434 m altitude in the Baba Budan Massif. Kemmangundi takes its name from three words kannada – kempu (red), mannu (ground) and gundi (pit) designate a place with red earth. It is one of the popular tourist spots in Karnataka and one of the best places to visit near Bangalore.
Kemmanagundi is also known as KR Hills, after King Mysore Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. Hypnotized by the beauty of the place, he made Kemmangundi his summer retreat. There is a hill in the shape of a horse’s head. In Kannada, a horse is called Kudre and the word kannada for face is Mukha. This region is under the aegis of the world’s number one priority for tiger conservation.
