Lamayuru is a small village in Ladakh, in the middle of Kargil and the Srinagar-Leh highway in Leh. The hot landscapes carved into the Great Himalayas are its claim to fame. Lamayuru is approximately 100 km before Leh, immediately after Fotu la, the highest passage on the Srinagar Leh motorway. The Fotu Sat roads are in good condition and it is nice to drive through this passage.
Mahasiddacarya Naropa founded Lamayuru in the 11th century. Lamayuru has a cave monastery with a lunar landscape. Lamayuru consists of 5 buildings, the structure is now in ruins.
The annual festival, known as Yuru Kabgyat, is the main attraction of the monastery. The mask dance of the lamas are the highlight of the festival. Another important ritual followed during the festival is the burning of patterns. It means destroying the ego in every individual. In addition to the monastery, Lamayuru attracts tourists with its landscape, which is quite similar to the lunar terrain.
