Bhadra Dam A major landmark in Chikmagalur, Karnataka is the Bhadra Dam built on the Bhadra River, a tributary of the famous Tungabhadra River. The dam became more powerful after people in the area began using water for irrigation and generating electricity for the surrounding towns and villages. The dam was commissioned in 1965. The river originated in Samse, in the powerful Western Ghats, and then began to flow eastward across the Deccan Plateau.
The main tributaries are Somavahini, Thadabehalla and Odirayanahalla. Bhadra crosses the city of Bhadravathi and the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. Then, it meets the Tunga River at the Koodli River and the combined river flows to the east under the name of Tungabhadra. The Bhadra dam built on the river is 1.5 km from the village of Lakkavalli and 50 km upstream from the confluence of the rivers Bhadra and Tungabhadra
