Being a favourite of the English during the Raj, Mussoorie has seen a lot of changes and has always come out being the favoured one. A city and a municipality now, Mussoorie is situated in the Dehradun district of the state of Uttarakhand, India. Being the most visited hill station of the country; Mussoorie is no doubt one of the most beautiful of hill station of India. History A young British officer named Captain Young and his friend Mr. Shore were exploring the hills and stumbled upon a beautiful place where they made their shooting lodge. Locals called it Mansoori because of the shrub of Mansoor found in plenty here. The English liked the places and started returning, now in larger numbers. They called the place Mussoorie. As the English rule continued, Mussoorie became a summer retreat for the English and upper Indian class. The Nehrus especially visited the place quite often. The Mall road was closed for Indians at that time and there are many stories on how Motilal Nehru flouted the rule, walking on the road, paying big fines. After Independence, Mussoorie was the place where the Tibetan population was made to settle for sometime before shifting them to Dharmasala, where its headquarters are situated now. Mussoorie Today Today Mussoorie is a busy little place with tourists flocking around the shops, cafes, eateries and the market. Having innumerable hotels and being a victim of over commercialisation because of its popularity, Mussoorie is perhaps losing the old world charm it once had. Still one can see the old English buildings, churches as well as graveyards
