Krabi Emerald Pool is a unique attraction in southern Thailand. Krabi is renowned for its areas of outstanding natural beauty and one of the must-see places is the Emerald Basin, located in the Thung Teao Forest Nature Park, an unusual lowland forest rich in biodiversity, with a path of a crystal pond. Located in the Khao Pra-Bang Kram region, trekking in nature is a great place to spot rare animal and plant species, including the bird Pitta Gurney, which was once considered extinct. The forest is full of century-old trees stretching to the sky, unusual forest creatures and limestone buttresses opening onto an astonishing pool of emeralds.

There is a park office nearby, in Ban Bang Teao, which provides some information, although their main purpose is to ensure that the no-hunting zone is respected and that this sanctuary, naturally beautiful, not be damaged.

The other must-see spot in the reserve is the brightly colored “Blue Pool” located some 600m upstream from the Emerald Basin. If time permits, the extra distance is worth it – but beware! Although the water seems magical and inviting, being closer to the source, it is much warmer and surrounded by quicksand, so no bathing is allowed.

Ornithologists also appreciate this region, the forest home to many rare species, including the endangered Pitta de Gurney. A full day could easily be spent here as there are many other trails around the site.
