The background history suggests that constructing the Gulmarg Gondola Project began with the Government of Jammu and Kashmir in the year 1987. The entire Gondola ride is divided into two parts. The first and second phases start from Gulmarg towards Kongdoori in the direction of Kongdoori up to Apharwat Peak, respectively. The duration for the first part is about 10 minutes, while the second phase can be completed in just 12 minutes. The second phase of the Gondola project was completed extremely quickly. In just two years, the project was completed and operational on May 28th in 2005. The Gondola system is comprised of 19 towers to operate the system that runs between Gulmarg and the Kongdoor stretch. This stretch can accommodate 1,500 people in its upper limit per hour. The second stretch, or Phase II, which runs between Kongdoor to Apharwat, comprises 18 towers and can accommodate 600 people in an hour.
