Cellular Jail on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, is a dark reminder of British rule on the Indian mainland. This dreadful and exhausting colonial prison in this terrifying archipelago was used by the British specifically to expel Indian political prisoners. The mainland prison, also known as Kala Pani (Fish means death or time and Pani means water in Sanskrit), saw the most terrible punishments imposed on prisoners. India’s independence struggle saw immediate freedom fighters like Batukeshwar Dutt and Veer Savarkar imprisoned. The prison is now open to the public for viewing as a national monument, and its museum gives a glimpse of India’s years of struggle for freedom.
