How to Reach By Air
Pakyoung Airport is located 31 km south of Gangtok. It is a Greenfield Airport and covers an area of 201 acres. It stands at 4590 feet and is India’s fifth highest airport. It was inaugurated on 24thof September 2018, and commercial flight operations began on the 4th of October 2018.
Pakyoung is not yet home to international flights. However, flights depart from Guwahati, Delhi, Kolkata every day. Direct connections to Pakyoung Airport are provided by AirAsia, Spicejet, Indigo, and Air India. It is best to fly to India from a major city, as these cities have connections to Sikkim.
Bagdogra is the closest airport to Gangtok, and it has daily connections to Kolkata, New Delhi. Chennai, Mumbai. Bangalore. The airport has good links to other international airports, such as Nepal, Bhutan, and Thailand, connecting Sikkim with Paro and Kathmandu.
You can also fly by helicopter between Bagdogra (Gangtok), which takes only 35 minutes and is used for military purposes.
How to Reach By Road
Gangtok, the capital of the state, is well connected to West Bengal by National Highway 31A. It also connects with other parts of India. Buses and taxis are readily available from all major cities near Gangtok. Sikkim has good connections to Siliguri, a gateway to northeast India via the National Highway 31. It takes 4 hours to drive the 145 km on twisty roads through dense forest and carpeted mountains. Sikkim is a popular destination for tourists who enjoy the beautiful scenery of the River Teesta and the soaring peaks parked on the opposite side of the road. Sikkim is also easily accessible from Darjeeling (122 km), Kolkata (705 km), Kalimpong (104km), and Bagdogra (153 km). Regular SNT (Sikkim Nationalised Transport) buses are available for travel to Sikkim-Gangtok’s capital. They also travel between the district headquarters of the state and its sub-divisions. SNT’s bus terminal is located in Siliguri. . You can book your tickets online, rather than buying them at the counter. Private buses and shared Jeeps are also available for Sikkim. If you want to rent the entire vehicle, you can opt for private taxis or cabs. . Avoid the roads if you travel during monsoon. The frequent landslides, floods, and other natural disasters in this season can cause the streets to become impassable. This could cause delays in your journey.
How to Reach By Train
New Jalpaiguri (NJP), approximately 6-7kms away from Siliguri, is the closest central railway station. Gangtok is 130 km away. Siliguri, located about 114km from Gangtok, and very few trains pass through it. It is possible to travel by road from Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri railway stations
